Common questions
Maintain 1–3 ppm for daily swimming. Below 1 ppm and the water is under-sanitized. Above 5 ppm is irritating to eyes and skin. After heavy rain or a pool party, levels can drop fast.
Liquid chlorine raises free chlorine immediately with no added stabilizer — best for shock. Tablets release slowly and contain stabilizer — better for daily maintenance. Most pool owners use both.
UV destroys unprotected chlorine within hours. If your cyanuric acid (stabilizer) is below 30 ppm, chlorine burns off rapidly. Check your CYA level before adding more chlorine.
Shock when free chlorine drops below 1 ppm, after heavy rain, after a large gathering, or weekly during peak season. Wait until chlorine returns below 3 ppm before swimming.
